All materials expand and contract with temperature but at varying rates. If a tile is adhered directly to a substrate with different properties the layers are rigidly bound together and their different reactions to the environment result in tension and crack formation.

Uncoupling and crack membranes are installed between the substrate and the tile allowing the two layers to move independently therefore neutralising stresses and tensions that may otherwise result in tile failure. This ensures the installation lasts for years to come.

Some uncoupling and crack membranes are also waterproof and can be used in conjunction with other products as part of a tanking solution in wet areas.

There are even uncoupling membranes with integrated electric underfloor heating!
